Volunteering - Skills Based Projects Around the World

Want to travel and use your professional skills to make an impact?

As opposed to “voluntourism,” MovingWorlds.org supports Experteering - giving professionals the opportunity to give what they're good at, anywhere, anytime, for any length of time - from a few weeks to a few months or longer. (See coverage in HuffPost here and here or on TV here).

What: You can volunteer your professional skills in tech, business/marketing, creative/design, and more. While membership is $125 for life (one time fee only), they guarantee you’ll like it. If you don't find a project you love or don't love the service, you get your money back.

Benefits: they scope and vet the projects, provide personal support to every matched volunteer/project, have trainings and facilitate a planning process to ensure you make a real impact AND learn valuable skills.  Plus, research shows that experiences like this are GREAT for your career.

SFTech4Good members get 10% off your membership with this coupon: SFTech4Good-Rocks-2015-VQ7Y

They also have corporate programs and can help you pilot one at your own company.

Nonprofits & Data Science Volunteers Needed (San Francisco)

DataKind San Francisco is looking for nonprofits that need data science help, and data scientist hackathon volunteers, for an upcoming fall DataDive.

E-mail sfbayarea@datakind.org for more information!

Past DataDive hackathons have included work on both local and global challenges, like:

  1. Helping TechSoup understand trends in nonprofit technology requests in Europe
  2. Helping MEDA ensure San Franciscans have financial independence
  3. Helping SFHIP ensure San Franciscans stay safe in their neighborhoods

----------------------------------------------------------

Data Scientists / Nonprofits - Scaling Projects

DataLook has curated a list of impressive reusable data-driven projects for social good. The #openimpact marathon aims to maximize their replication. There are all sorts of projects you can bring to your city to do social good. Some have already been replicated and the rest should spread since they’re that great!

Two projects for example:

Food Inspection Forecasting | Predicts food establishments most at risk for the types of violations most likely to spread food-borne illness

Cute Pets Twitter Bot | Twitter bot for animal shelters that increases the likelihood that potential adopters find adoptable animals

To bring 10 projects to your city, just join #openimpact on Slack!  Or spread the word with some sample social media blurbs here:

You <3 #data + #code + #hacking + #philanthropy? Then check out the #openimpact replication marathon http://blog.datalook.io/openimpact/

Wondering how to use your data skills to give back? Then check out the #openimpact replication marathon http://blog.datalook.io/openimpact/

Nonprofits: Need Fundraising Help? Try This

SFTech4Good member Hang Zhang, who attended the July brunch event, is currently looking for nonprofits that are looking for new ways of fundraising using a tech platform.

The idea is to re-brand giving among donors as a consumer purchase. He can work with you to break down your mission into specific impacts that donors can understand and then figure out the true, sustainable cost of delivering that impact. Donors could then buy a specific impact they want to see happen in the world and you would help communicate back to them the change their money made in the world. The main value they would provide you is access to a new donor pool that might be hard to reach yourself.

The commitment from nonprofits would be about an hour a week. Interested? Contact Hang Zhang, hang@bumblebeelabs.com, for details.

Volunteer Professional Advice on Job-Hunting with Conversations for Good

Finding a job can be a challenging - and finding an engaging career can be next to impossible.

Conversations for Good, a growing 501c(3) non-profit, aims to end the mystery and confusion that always seems to surround the job matching process by matching professionals (Career Advisors) with jobseekers (Advisees) for 30 minute phone interviews.

Conversations for Good encourages professionals with limited time to give back with a small time commitment and offers Advisees insights and interview practice as they find their respective passions. The organization has partnered with an Oakland youth group called Youth UpRising to connect our volunteer Career Advisors to their youth group to learn about the landscape of different career paths.

In the coming months, Conversations for Good is hosting a series of events for hackers to find a way to better match Career Advisors with Advisees.

Volunteer Opportunity for Your Company: Startups Give Back

You don’t need to be at a big company with a foundation or philanthropy budget to be able to give back.

Startups Give Back matches nonprofits and startups for volunteering events. It’s simple:  people in the startup community get out of their offices and work on projects that make a difference in their communities. The mission is simple: to make philanthropy a top priority for startups around the world.

Attendees have an opportunity to make a significant impact and, at the same time, meet people from fellow startups (tech and non-tech). The combination of volunteering and networking creates an unforgettable experience. And you can walk away with meaningful connections, but more importantly, knowing you made a difference.

If you want to show up for a few hours or a day and volunteer, Startups Give Back can help you find a volunteering opportunity (currently in San Francisco only, but expansion is planned).  Check out www.startupsgiveback.org for details!
